Barden Park hosted the 2019 State Combined Events Championship last weekend, with kids from all over the state travelling to Dubbo to take part.
Kids aged 5-17 competed in a variety of track and field events, a points system determining the winner of each division.
We’ve recapped some of the best moments from an exciting weekend of athletics.
Sienna Vassella, daughter of Australian Olympian Jane Jamieson, finished third in the U8 competition.
The seven-year-old dominated the field events, placing first in the discus and second in the shot put.
Jamieson, a Commonwealth Games Heptathlon Gold Medallist, presented her daughter the bronze medal, but admits that she didn’t predict the exciting outcome.
“I’m actually really surprised,” said Jamieson.
“We didn’t really expect anything from her – she just wanted to go to the zoo!”
Brothers Benjamin and Daniel Kasozi from Hills District Little Athletics achieved something very special in the shot put event on Saturday, claiming first and second place in the U12 division respectively.
Benjamin’s best throw of 15.69m also set a new record in their age group – Daniel wasn’t far behind with an impressive 15.54m throw.
Their healthy rivalry came to the fore when we had a quick chat at the end of the day.
“Which of you will win the discus event tomorrow?”
Benjamin: “Me.”
Daniel: “No, me.”
Benjamin: “No, I will.”
Daniel: “No, I will.”
15-year-old Robbie Cullen from Cherrybrook put on a masterclass at the high jump event on Saturday, achieving a best of 1.90m.
Not only was the jump a new PB for him, but it sits as the highest successful U15 Boys attempt in this Championship from the last three years.
Cullen finished 2nd overall in the U15 division for the weekend.
Local girl Ella Penman registered the fastest time in the U13 800m run on Sunday – an impressive 2:26:71.
The 12-year-old from Dubbo was especially proud she achieved the feat in front of a home crowd that included her mum, brothers, sisters, as well as “lots and lots of friends”.
