The NSW Junior Championships hosted by Athletics NSW saw hundreds of little athletes
compete across 3 days of competition. The championship was highlighted by many
performances including personal and season bests. The second day of the championship was
finished with electrifying performances by athletes at the annual Sydney Track Classic.
Highlights include:
Liam Coles of Toukley competed across the jumps, sprints, and hurdles over the 3 day
championship. Coles walked away from the championships with gold in the 100, 100H, and
200H, adding silver in the 200, and an impressive fourth in the long jump and triple jump.
The championship weekend came after Liam competed at the Regional 2 Championships
setting records in the U14 90H and 200, whilst also medalling in the 100, 200H, Long Jump
& Triple Jump.
Former Bathurst Little Athlete Zen Clark proved his dominance over the sprints taking out
the U20 100/200 double and was presented his medals by 400m Australian Record Holder
and father Darren Clark. Sutherland athlete Ivy Boothroyd also took out the double in the
Under 14 girls 400/800.
Jack Gould of Tumut & District walked away with a bronze medal in the U18 Boys 800m as
second NSW athlete across the line behind Hills District Little Athlete Joshua
Atkinson. Campbelltown’s Damita Betham looked unstoppable taking out the sprint treble in the under
15 girls matching her Region 7 results.Cherrybrook Athlete Jenny Blundell edged herself closer to her
second Olympic berth after years
Sydney Track Classic
The Saturday night of the NSW Junior Championships was complimented by the Coles
Summer Super Series Sydney Track Classic.The Sydney Track Classic, this year became
apart of history as the inaugural World Athletics Continental Tour meet. A bronze level meet,
Sydney is part of the new series of World Athletics competitions held throughout the world in
2020.
Brandon Starc was amongst the strong crop of former Little Athletes (Parammatta LAC)
competing on the night as he soared over 2.30m in the men’s high jump and was extremely
close to the Olympic Qualifying standard of 2.33m. This matched his best performance in 18
months.
Former Hornsby athlete Liz Clay has now won three from three hurdle races and took the
time to chat with current Hornsby Little Athletes post-race to pass on some sound advice .
Whilst Nicola McDermott cleared 1.94m and attempted a new personal best of 1.97m in the
women’s High Jump.
Rio Olympian and former Cherrybrook Little Athlete Jenny Blundell is returning to form after years
of being plagued by injuries. The 1500m race was packed with elite athletes vying for the 4:04 qualifier,
and Blundell came close posting a time of 4:05.35 just behind Australian Record Holder and former
Victorian Little Athlete Linden Hall who won in 4:05.16.
With the Australian domestic season heating up and many edging closer to the Olympic
Qualifiers how many former Little Athletes will we see in Tokyo?
