A new and exciting brand of athletics headed to Wellington last Friday, 2nd November for the second Community Nitro Event to be held in Western NSW this year. Members of the Wellington Little Athletics Committee, Wellington Aboriginal Corporation Health Service (WACHS) and Quit B Fit joined Little Athletics NSW in organising a fantastic event that surely won’t be the last of its kind in the area.
From 6pm, just under 100 people were running jumping, throwing and cheering each other around Rygate Park. Little Athletics members, teachers, students, parents, members of community organisations and local rugby league teams participated, with each team having their own theme song and outfit.
Teams of six were split into three age categories: School years 4-6, 7-9 and 10+. The atmosphere was electric – athletes were able to cheer on the action from on the track, whilst captivating commentators conducted insightful mid-race interviews.
Little Athletics NSW Regional Athletics Coordinator, Michael Gardiner, was rapt with the event.
“I really think that this type of event is a great way to allow parents and volunteers to have the chance to compete with or against their children” he says.
“It is a short sharp event with a pretty positive impact on the community. I look forward to helping other Little A’s centre in the region roll out these events.”
